Key Stage 1

We aim to reflect the vision of our school in our wide and exciting curriculum by ensuring we follow our synthetic phonics scheme rigorously, teach through a mastery approach in maths and ensure all children have access to engaging, exciting and inspirational lessons throughout their time in key stage 1.

We feel it is crucial to build on the excellent practise seen in our Early Years settings within the school. We work hard to ensure the transition is smooth as the children progress into Key Stage 1. As part of this we are mindful of the needs of both the cohort and each unique child as we plan and prepare for each new year.  We feel it is essential to maintain a strong partnership with parents, carers and guardians of the young children we are working with every day.

To do this we:

- Begin year 1 with a continuous provision style classroom and move towards a more formal structured day in readiness for year 2 and the higher expectations which go alongside this.

- Hold curriculum meetings with parents in the first few weeks of term so they are informed of the changes they will see in their child's day, what they are learning and what is expected of them at home.

- Have an open door policy so that parents feel able to discuss their child's needs or any questions and concerns they have. Parents have access to class dojo so they are able to communicate with teachers even if they are not able to see them in person.

- Hold multiple transition afternoons during the Summer Term before children move to their new year group so that they are already beginning to form a positive relationship with their new teaching staff.
