At Windrush, we teach a broad and culturally rich History curriculum to all pupils, so that they can understand past events and how they shaped the world we live in today and the people who live around us. Our History curriculum is planned ambitiously for all key stage phases, with topics chosen that represent every aspect of life. These include local historical studies where pupils will understand more about the history of their personal surroundings, to global historical events which pupils can begin to understand and make comparisons with their own lives.

We intend for pupils to learn from a range of races, religions, genders and cultures in History, so that their cultural capital is broadened significantly beyond their own experiences. We offer pupils plentiful opportunities to discuss, debate, question and enquire about their History learning so as to shape them into thoughtful Historians.

Teaching aims to bring the past to life, even for the youngest children, through drama, visitors, educational visits, artefacts and exciting experiences. For example, children in year 1 visit Oxford Castle and Prison, learn about the history behind the Battle of Hastings and reenact this through drama. Pupils in year 2 learn about the Great Fire of London and recreate a histroically accurate street (in collaboration with their DT learning) which they then burn to create an accurate depiction of this event.
